The IKEA Catalogue 2013
Amazing Facts You Probably Never Knew![note color=”#FFFFCC”]The IKEA catalogue is produced yearly. First published in 1951 in Sweden, it was only in Swedish. Figures from 2004 show us the IKEA catalogue takes around 70% of IKEA‘s annual marketing spend. [/note]
[note color=”#FFFFCC”] Around 208 million copies of the IKEA catalogue were printed in the financial year 2013 worldwide, more than double the number of Christian Bibles expected to be printed in the same period. 62 different language versions were created for forty three countries for the 2013 catalogue .[/note]
[divider=”1″] [note color=”#FFFFCC”] The IKEA Catalogue has over 300 pages and around 12 thousand products. It is sent both by mail and given away in stores in each country. Each yearly edition of the catalogue takes about ten months to put together, from initial concepts to final printed product. Much of the catalogue is produced by IKEA Communications AB in Älmhult, Sweden.[/note] [note color=”#FFFFCC”]Älmhult in Sweden is the site of the first IKEA store and where IKEA Communications operates the largest photo studio in Europe at 8 thousand square meters. The studio employed 285 photographers, carpenters, interior designers and other personnel working full time on photo shoots in 2012. The catalogue is printed on chlorine-free paper of a minimum 10-15% after consumer waste.[/note] [divider=”1″]
[note color=”#FFFFCC”]IKEA started working with computer-generated imagery in 2005. A single computer-rendered image of a small wooden chair was placed in the 2006 edition of the catalogue. Anneli Sjogren, head of photography at IKEA says customers did not notice the computer generated chair. By the 2013 edition, 12% of all pictures for the IKEA catalogue, brochures and website are computer-generated. That figure is expected to rise to at least 25% from 2014.[/note]
[note color=”#FFFFCC”]’Augmented reality’ was introduced into the 2013 catalogue. “X-ray” views through furniture compartments, videos, how-to guides and other interactive content can now be accessed by scanning a symbol on the catalogue with a mobile device such as an iPad or iPhone.[/note] [divider=”1″]
